Why Do We Need Protective Sunglasses?

Global warming and the changes in the atmosphere have resulted in higher levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation which pose higher health risks, particularly for the eyes and the skin. Protecting our eyes from the ultraviolet rays of the sun should be more than just wearing eyeglasses; the eyewear that we choose should be protective sunglasses or the type that can protect against visible light and ultraviolet light.

A good pair of protective sunglasses should be 100 percent UV resistant. UV radiation is comprised of low frequency light waves and it is of three types: UVA, UVB and UVC. The UVA rays are the ones that cause sun-related drug reactions while UVB causes cataract. The latter also has the ability to penetrate cloud layers and water. The UVC is not much of a concern since it is filtered mostly by the atmosphere. Another type of radiation coming from the sun is the infrared radiation or heat rays. Infrared rays are not as dangerous as UVB although they can exacerbate the damaging force of the sun particularly in places located near bodies of water and snow. Primarily, it is the UVB rays that we all should be concerned about.

A good pair of sunglasses should be able to block 99-100 percent of UV light. For someone trying to find sunglasses that provide the highest level of protection, look for brands that have UV absorption of up to 400 nanometers and those that meet ANSI UV requirements. In terms of tint, yellow lenses are rated 97 percent and clear-colored glasses are at 80 percent in terms of UV and infrared radiation protection.

The types of sunglasses that are impact-resistant also function as protective eyewear. For people who are into sports, impact-resistant eyeglasses are the best choice. This has more to do with minimizing the damage that can result from accidents and impacts associated with highly physical sports. Also, most sunglasses designed particularly for sports are made from high quality materials and are surer bets when it comes to providing protection, both against the sun and against possible impact accidents.

Protective sunglasses are designed to protect the eyes from the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays. Typical over-the-counter sunglasses are sometimes not good enough and consumers should look for models that have 100 percent UV blocking ability, the right level of UV absorption and impact resistance features. Before buying a pair, a shopper should make sure that the product will be able to serve its purpose.
