Vintage Pucci Sunglasses: An Example of Classic Modernity

There is a saying that whatever the Italians do, they do it in style. Perhaps that is why some of the best known designers in the world are of Italian origin. Focusing on fashion, we have the likes of Versace, Armani, and Ferre. One more titan in the world of fashion design is Emilio Pucci. The stylistic and unique apparel and accessories he had created over the years have won him critical acclaim and commercial success the world over. In fact, vintage Pucci sunglasses and apparel are still highly regarded today.

Pucci started his ascent to stardom during the post-World War II era, a vanguard in the world of fashion for men and women experimenting with various styles and taste during the period. His love of color is seen not only in clothing, but also in vintage Pucci sunglasses. Many of the classic eyewear he designed during the 1960s shows his eclectic taste: there is one pair that sports patterns of lavender, purple, aqua, periwinkle, and turquoise in the frame. Another example from the 1960s is a pair of oversized sunglasses, with a funky frame in blue and white – the epitome of the outrageous glamour that characterized the period.

Classic eyewear pieces from Pucci in the 1970s are just as stylish. For instance, he designed a wraparound pair of sunglasses sporting a psychedelic frame of gold, purple, and fuchsia – perfect for the age of disco. Another classic released circa 1972 is a pair of shades that has the signature Pucci color mix in the frame: black, purple, blue, and teal. These sunglasses have the signature Emilio Pucci mark at the sides of the frames. Those in mint condition bring high prices – upwards of US$200 – attesting to the continuing appeal of Pucci’s style among collectors with eclectic yet discerning taste.

Vintage Pucci sunglasses can be acquired via Internet sites specializing in memorabilia, online auction sites, or other collectors themselves. Or if a person is simply content to admire and not acquire, he or she can do so via exhibitions of Pucci’s work. An example is an exhibition held at the Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona from July to November 2005. It is a testament to the creativity of this late, great designer, who has influenced countless people from celebrities to fellow fashion designers. To behold a pair of vintage Pucci sunglasses is to be a witness to the greatness of one person’s fantastic imagination and creativity.
